he can hear himself. Chanting inaudible is not recommended.

Because the actual sound vibration of the mantra is a fully

spiritual sound. So when that sound vibration enters the ear it

has a very purifying effect. As we hear from this verse: "Any

living entity who hears this sound vibration becomes liberated".

Not only the chanting of the holy name but the recitation of the

"Srimad Bhagavatam" or other Vedic scriptures. Sometimes when

Prabhupada was in foreign countries he gave lectures in other

languages. Just like I remember once he was in London. He was at

an engagement and he spoke in Hindi, but he told all his

disciples: "You stay here and listen, you`ll be purified by the

transcendental sound vibration." Once in Tokyo on Janmastami he

was reading from the Bhagavatam in Sanskrit; the same thing, he

told all the devotees, "You stay and listen, your hearts will be

purified, because this sound vibration itself is completely pure.

So in this way, whether the people understand or don`t

understand, the devotees should go out and chant the holy names

of the Lord. They should perform regular Harinama sankirtana on

the streets of the cities. That was the way in which Caitanya

Mahaprabhu, Himself, preached. Everywhere He went, He would

inspire everyone, to dance and chant the holy of the Lord in

ecstasy .

TRANSLATION

Thus all living entities--some moving and some standing

still in the forest of Jharikhanda--became maddened by hearing

the holy name of Lord Krsna vibrated by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

In all the villages through which the Lord passed and in all

the places He rested on His journey, everyone was purified and

awakened to ecstatic love of God.

COMMENTARY by H.H. PRABHAVISNU SWAMI:

There`s a nice verse spoke by Maharaja Yuddhistira in the "Srimad

Bhagavatam" (SB 1.13.10).

bhavad-vidha bhagavatas tirtha-bhutah svayam vibho

tirthi-kurvanti tirthani svantah-sthena gadabhrta

He say to Vidura;

"Saints of your caliber are like places of pilgrimage. Because

you are always absorbed in chanting the glories of the Lord; you

purify all those persons who come in contact with you."

So whether one meets the Lord personally, or whether meets the a

devotee who is strictly following the instructions of the Lord,

the effect will be there, the potency will be there.

TRANSLATION

When someone heard the chanting of the holy name from the

mouth of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and someone else heard this

chanting from that second person, and someone again heard this

chanting from the third person, everyone in all countries became

a Vaisnava through such disciplic succession. Thus everyone

chanted the holy name of Krsna and Hari, and they danced, cried

and smiled.

PURPORT

The transcendental power or potency of the Hare Krsna

maha-mantra is herein explained. First, the holy name is vibrated

by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. When someone hears from Him directly,

he is purified. When another person hears from that person, he

also is purified. In this way the purification process is

advanced among pure devotees. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the

Supreme Personality of Godhead, and no one can claim His potency.

Nonetheless, if one is a pure devotee, hundreds and thousands of

men can be purified by his vibration. This potency is within

every living being, provided he chants the Hare Krsna maha-mantra

offenselessly and without material motives. When a pure devotee

chants offenselessly, another person will become a Vaisnava, and

from him another Vaisnava will emerge. This is the parampara

system.

COMMENTARY by H.H. PRABHAVISNU SWAMI:

So sometimes there is a debate as to what is a pure devotee; who

is a pure devotee? But actually, one can ascertain from many

purports of Srila Prabhupada that he considered a person who is

following the regulative principles and the instructions of the

spiritual master in the bona-fide parampara; he is a pure devotee

or he is becoming purified in the proper way.
