and in everyone`s
heart. So therefore he can see every one`s spiritual connection
with Krsna.
Just as this verse is being quoted from the " Bhagavad gita", the
pure devotee, the humble sage sees everyone with an equal vision;
that means he sees everyone connected to Krsna. It doesn`t
necessarily mean that he`ll deal in exactly the same way with an
elephant or a dog. Of course, in this particular case, Caitanya
Mahaprabhu was in such ecstasy, and his influence was so powerful
that he was dealing with everyone in the same way. Just like he
would tell the human beings, and he would tell the animals: "Just
chant Hare Krishna!"
There`s also examples of great devotees who were very
affectionate to animals, and inspire them in Krsna consciousness.
We were reading this morning that Sivananda Sena used to have
one dog and he was always feeding that dog prasadam on the way to
Jagannatha Puri, but one day, the dog disappeared. So Sivananda
began to fast -- all the way to Puri. But when he reached
Jagannatha Puri he found the dog sitting beside Lord Caitanya.
And Lord Caitanya was feeding prasadam to the dog and very
shortly that dog went back to the spiritual world.
But generally the maha- bhagavata the pure devotee of the Lord,
won`t necessarily deal exactly the same way with animals or with
human beings. He will deal with them according to their external
activities, but still he sees their true spiritual position at
the same time. Generally the maha-bhagavata devotees of the Lord,
in order to preach Krsna consciousness within this world,
have to make distinctions between different types of
personalities. So therefore, it is said that they behave on the
platform of the madyam adhikari`s and they distinguish between
four kinds of personalities.
So the four personalities are: firstly the Supreme Lord: The
devotee worships the Supreme Lord; then he sees the devotees and
he makes friendship with the devotees and associates with them.
Then he sees those who are in ignorance, but who are innocent,
and he preaches to them. Then he sees those who are envious and
very atheistic and he avoids their association. So it`s necessary
to make distinctions between these kinds of persons in order to
encourage others in Krsna consciousness and help others to make
progress. Especially a neophyte devotee has to be trained how to
distinguish between different kinds of association. Because if he
takes the wrong association, if he associates with demoniac or
atheistic persons he will lose his Krsna consciousness
altogether.A maha- bhagavat wouldn`t be affected in any situation
because he`s always fully absorbed in Krsna. But a neophyte
requires guidance and instruction by good example.
So Prabhupada is giving stress here that the neophyte devotee
should not imitate, but he should follow in the footsteps of the
advanced devotees. So following in the footsteps means: following
the instructions. The pure devotees of the Lord, the acarya`s,
have given us instructions how to practically execute Krsna
consciousness in the present day and age. That`s why Prabhupada
stressed, "Don`t try to imitate Haridas Thakura." Even though
Haridas Thakura is the Nama acarya, don`t try to imitate him, by
chanting Hare Krsna 300.000 times a day, because you are not pure
enough. You have to become purified gradually, by following the
regulative principles, and by hearing the "Srimad Bhagavatam".And
especially one has to be engaged in active devotional service --
preaching activity.
Preaching activity is very purifying. It is a very powerful means
for advancing in Krsna consciousness. Prabhupada said that "those
who have got life, they can preach." By that preaching activity,
one is connecting others to Krsna. One is forced to depened
very much on Krsna, and he has to work very hard for Krsna, and
so in this way he wont be distracted by material sense
gratification; because in Kali yuga, in the present time, people
are very agitated; it is very difficult for them to control the
mind and the senses. There are so many allurements of material
sense gratification. All around people are engaged
