SB 4.11.8
My dear son, the killing of sinless Yaksas which you have undertaken is not at
all approved by authorities, this is not befit to our family, which is supposed
to know what is religious and irreligious.
My dear son, it has been proved that you are very much affectionate towards
your brother and are greatly aggrieved at his being killed by Yaksas, but just
consider - for one Yaksa`s offence you have killed many others who were
innocent.
One should not accept the body as the self and thus like the animals kill the
bodies of others. This is especially forbidden by saintly persons who follow
the path of devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
PURPORT
So, this is Svayambhuva Manu speaking to Druva Maharaja. He is a grandfather of
Druva Maharaja. He is the father of Maharaja Uttanapada, and Svayambhuva Manu
is also one of the twelve mahajanas, or authorities on devotional service.
Svayambhuva Manu was a little bit concerned about Dhruva Maharaja`s behaviour,
because it appeares that Dhruva Maharaja is acting a little bit beyond that
what is required. Because Dhruva Maharaja is a king and it is his duty to
punish everyone who commits a sinful act. And it is also appropriate for the
king to become angry. Othervise, how he will punish the miscreants if he is not
angry? He must express his anger in order to assume his responsibility as a
king and protect the citizens. And if a king ever sees any behaviour that is
contrary to religious principles, he must be prepared to chastise him. Because
the king is supposed to be the protector of religious principles. So, for
Dhruva Maharaja to be angry at the Yaksas is appropriate behaviour. However,
Svayambhuva Manu was observing that Dhruva Maharaja seems to be going a little
bit too far. It`s one thing to punish a person who is responsible for the death
of your brother, but now you have already killed so many of these Yaksas. Don`t
you think it`s sufficient? Why are you going to whipe out the whole race for
the behaviour of one person who misbehaved? So, because you are the king and
are expected to be the protector of religion... Svayambhuva Manu is offering an
argument to Dhruva Maharaja, and he is saying that killing of the sinless
Yaksas is not approved by authorities. It`s not appropriate for one who is
supposed to know the laws of religion. In other words, you are a pretector of
religious principles, but now you appear to be acting in an irreligious way.
So, because Svayambhuva Manu is capable of establishing true religious
principles - that is the position of a mahajana.
guhayam mahajano yena gatah sa pantha
principles
is hidden in the heart of an unadulterated self-realized devotee of the Lord.
Therefore one should accept whatever path that the mahajanas advocate. When the
mahajanas advocate the path of religion, it`s because they are actual seers of
the truth. They have the power to discriminate between what is religion and
what is irreligion. Because sometimes it is seen, especially in this age of
Kali-yuga, that one accepts irreligion to be religion and religion to be
irreligion. In other words, one must have the power to discriminate between
what is religion and what is irreligion. And because the mahajana is
established on the path of religion, he has proper vision. And one who has
proper vision can establish the truth, whenever there is any discrepancy in the
execution of one`s duties in life. We see many examples in Srimad Bhagavatam
when such personalities come to establish the truth and to establish the proper
path to follow when one appeares to be deviating from this path. Just like
previously Svayambhuva Manu had asked Priyavrata Maharaja to accept the
responsibility as an emperror of the universe. And Priyavrata Maharaja was the
son of Svayambhuva Manu, but he was also instructed in devotional service by
Narada Muni. So Priyavrata Maharaja was inclined to follow the path which had
been established by Narada Muni for him to follow. Certainly that is an
auspicious path. Narada Muni was instructing Priyavrata to live in celibacy,
renunciation, accept the vows of brahmacarya and, as Narada always preaches, he
preached the path of nivrti marg, which is the path of total renunciation. So
when Svayambhuva Manu said to Priyavrata Maharaja, "I want you to accept
responsibility as an emperror of the world", Priyavrata Maharaja was inclined
to follow the path established by Narada. Yet, there was the higher plan of the
Lord, and at that particular time Lord Brahma descended on his swan-carrier.
Here we have three mahajanas: Svayambhuva Manu, Narada Muni, and now appeares
Lord Brahma. They all were mahajanas.
