That means, they all were fully

conversant, they all understand the path of devotional service. So, Lord

Brahma, when he appeared, he began to instruct Priyavrata. Because Brahma is

the spiritual master of Narada and father of Svayambhuva Manu. So, he is in the

position of superiority. He instructed Priyavrata in such a way, that it was

ordained by the will of the Lord that he accept this responsibility. And

therefore Priyavrata Maharaja should accept this position as emperror of the

universe for the period of time that is required and then, at the later point

of life, after executing his duties properly, he could also follow that path

which was established by Narada Muni. So, Lord Brahma appeared to establish the

proper path for Priyavrata Maharaja, and Priyavrata Maharaja accepted it. He

followed that path very rigidly throughout all his life, and having properly

executed his prescribed duties, at the later point in life he achieved

perfection. But he fulfilled the duties that were required from him, because

that was the path that was meant for him to follow, and it was established for

him by the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself through His agent, Lord

Brahma. So, the point is that the mahajans know this true path of religion. And

whenever they give an instruction, they never give any instruction which is

contrary to the path of religion. Although it appeared that Lord Brahma was

instructing Priyavrata to be entangled in married life and social affairs,

nontheless, such was the will of the Lord. Therefore, it is described that the

truth of religious principles is hidden in the heart of unadulterated devotees

of the Lord. And because they know the true path of religion, one should accept

whatever path the mahajanas advocate. So, similarly here we see Svayambhuva

Manu setting the proper path for Dhruva Maharaja, saying that "it is not

befitting one in our family to act contrary to the principles of religion.

Therefore you should not indulge in killing so many innocent Yaksas. You`ve

accomplished your duty, therefore please stop." Now also we see from the

example of this pastime, that Dhruva Maharaja was capable of accepting the good

instruction of Svayambhuva Manu, which was that he should stop this killing. It

was not befitting the saintly person to kill in this way. Just like the lower

forms of life, the animals, they are killing without discrimination. We should

not be of the same mentality. Therefore, we see, when the sadhu, or saintly

person, who has compassion for the welfare of all living beings, when he gives

instruction to others, there is an amazing effect that takes place in the life

of others. Just also, taking into consideration the mentality of Mrgari, the

hunter. Right from his birth he was trained to half-kill the animals and to

watch them die in slow death. And that was his source of pleasure in life. Even

when Narada asked him, "Why are you half-killing the animals?", he said, "I

enjoy it. I like watching these animals suffer in this way. I`ve been doing

this all my life. Is there something wrong?" So, he derived a certain mode of

pleasure in his behaviour, but Narada Muni could not tolerate seeing the

suffering of these animals. But Narada Muni also could not tollerate, thinking

how much Mrgari would suffer, as well. That is the nature of a sadhu. Sadhu is

one who is friendly towards all living entities. He doesn`t want to see anybody

suffering. He did not want the animals unnecessarily to suffer. But the

argument he used for Mrgari, which convinced Mrgari to stop half-killing the

animals, is that he convinced Mrgari that he was also going to suffer because

of this. And therefore, being very compassionate towards the hunter, he

preached to him in such a way that he completely gave up his sinful activities.

This is the power of the influence of the sadhu, one who sees all living

entities equally. And he is friendly towards all living beings. Of course,

sometimes people cannot hear. Even though there can be so many good

instructions, still they cannot hear. Just like Pariksit Maharaja describes in

the Tenth Canto, that the pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are

the right medicine to those who are undergoing the repetition of birth and

death. Therefore, he sais, who will fail to hear such descriptions exept the

butcher or the killer of the self. Just like I recently had one experience. I

was with a few devotees in the Southern Russia. And these devotees wanted to

take me to some place where I could recover, because I was very sick. So, they

offered to take me to the top of a mountain, which was many many hours outside

the city. It took quite a long time to go there. But, unfortunately, the

devotees didn`t make proper arrangements, they did not know what was on top of

the mountain. Although they wanted me to stay there for a few days, there were

no
